35-year survivor of Burkitt’s Lymphoma

I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 20 years old. My life might have ended soon thereafter if not for the incredible team of doctors who directed my treatment and saved my life. I am 56 now and have had the privilege of a healthy, full, wonderful life since then. Part of my purpose now is to give back… The cure is possible and that compels us to support those who are doing the work. We all deserve the chance to fulfill our lives.

MARISA SANCHEZ

PhD student, studying new therapies for resistant types of cancer

I am riding in memory of my sister who passed away four years ago from Hodgkins Lymphoma. During her 3 year battle, I watched her overcome challenges no one should ever have to face. Her enduring spirit is what inspires me to challenge myself physically and mentally, to accomplish goals I would have never imagined.

DR. MICHAEL MCHALE

Doctor, Researcher, Team Captain

Dr. McHale, a leader in gynecological oncology at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, goes the distance to stop cancer. He first joined Padres Pedal the Cause at the request of a young patient of his who signed up to ride while she was battling gynecological cancer. Inspired by her tenacity, Dr. McHale commits his free time to discovering ways that disease, once cleared, doesn't come back.

Leona and Steve understand the difference that Padres Pedal Discovery Grants can make in accelerating cures. For Leona, "Having worked at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center as Director, Research Development, I’m excited that breakthroughs from the high-risk, innovative collaborative research funded by Padres Pedal the Cause are poised to be translated into clinical trials for patients – patients who are our family and friends.” Now tackling their 6th year with Padres Pedal, both have committed to ride 100 miles and raise $5,000 for cancer research.

DR. DANIEL KAUFMAN

Two-time Discovery Grant recipient

Our research is focused on developing new cell-based therapies against cancer, targeting both blood cell cancers and solids tumors. We have new clinical trials starting later this year that we think will eventually lead to completely new and improved therapies against very challenging cancers. I know the world-class research and treatment institutions supported by Padres Pedal work together with the aim to create a world without cancer.

RUSS GOLD

Two-Time Pancreatic Cancer Fighter

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, with a survival rate of 10-20%. Russ Gold was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013, and, after surgery and chemo to remove the tumors, enjoyed 4.5 years cancer free. In April 2018, cancer cells were detected again, and he went back to treatment, but that doesn't stop him from tackling the hill climbs of the 88-mile Honeysprings Heartbreaker every year for Padres Pedal.

YADIRA GALINDO

Granddaughter, Five-time rider

Leukemia took my grandmother when my mom was 8. As a teenager, I watched helplessly as my grandfather succumbed to a brutal bout with lung cancer. As an adult, I held my breath when breast cancer ravaged my sister’s body. Modern medicine saved her. I ride for my family, and for the future of medicine that is helping families everyday.
