Coping with cancer and all its stages of treatment may be one of the toughest challenges anyone could ever be asked to face. So don’t go it alone. There are hundreds of programs and support groups out there designed with the intention of inspiring hope and a more positive outlook. Below you will find a list of some great cancer support programs in San Diego.

  • Those of you familiar with the Padres Pedal beneficiaries will recognize the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. They offer a variety of patient and family care programs designed by experts with a wealth of experience to provide the best integrated, whole-person care. They seek to improve your quality of life and relieve emotional stress by, “strengthening meaning, value, resilience, transcendence, and dignity.”

  • The Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, another Padres Pedal the Cause beneficiary, offers great support groups for kids and teenagers with cancer as well as for their families, siblings, and friends. A couple of their programs include CHAMPS, a support group for children with cancer ages 6-12, and Some of My Best Friends are Bald (SOMBFAB), a support group for teen cancer patients and their siblings.

  • Both Sharp HealthCare and Scripps Health offer phenomenal support groups and services to help patients and family members manage cancer and treatments. Check out a variety of complimentary therapy programs such as journaling and music therapy, or some of the cancer-specific support groups to help you connect with others in your situation.

  • Susan G. Komen provides a comprehensive list of local, San Diego support groups and programs dedicated to assisting you through the disorienting tribulations associated with cancer. • Tried yoga? How about Yoga Being: Yoga for Cancer Patients and Survivors? This therapeutic support program designed by San Diego local Jean Di Carlo-Wagner utilizes a restorative and gentle form of yoga to explore deep inner healing. Jean has created a very welcoming space full of healing and love.

  • If you’re a cancer survivor looking for something to help you get back on your feet, the 12-week Livestrong program at the Dan McKinney Family YMCA in La Jolla is a great place to start. In 2007, Livestrong partnered with the YMCA to help promote the importance of physical activity after a cancer diagnosis. The programs are offered at little to no cost, and they are specifically designed to help improve your physical well-being and quality of life.

The main point to remember is that you are not alone in fighting cancer. Your family isn’t the only one to dunked into these frigid waters. A tremendous community of support and love is out there to embrace you and those close to you. Don’t let cancer steer the boat.
