Fighting for a Cure
By Agnes Lee
Director, Investor Relations at Life Technologies
I have sustained much loss in my life because of cancer. Last year, I lost my father to pancreatic cancer, as well as a very close friend who had battled lymphoma for over two years. My mother also lost her fight with cancer, when the treatments weren’t as sophisticated and my mother-in-law also suffers from the aftermath of radiation treatment after her lymphoma cancer spread to her brain.
When I heard about the Pedal the Cause ride and the fact that we are raising money to directly fund cancer research ideas at the three NCI-funded centers in San Diego, I was immediately drawn to this opportunity to make a difference. I have seen first-hand the tough challenges that cancer patients experience with surgeries, continual tests, clinical trials and treatments. Although I have not ridden a bicycle since high school, I thought the least I could do was to take on the challenge of training for this ride.
With nine weeks of training behind me, I have to say this has been a gratifying personal journey for me. I have discovered (surprisingly) that I like cycling and have made many new friends across the company through our weekend training rides.
One of the reasons I pursued a finance position in the Life Sciences industry was to work for a company that strives to “make life better”. I truly believe that scientists are on the brink of solving complex diseases like cancer through the tools and technologies that all of us here at Life Technologies have worked so hard to create. I was very pleased to hear that Life Technologies is a lead sponsor of this ride because it reflects our commitment to our customers and to cancer research.
Please join me as I ride in honor of my parents and everyone who has experienced this horrible disease and with the hope that we will win the fight to find a cure.
