How to Participate

Are you ready to end cancer?
So are we. Padres Pedal the Cause culminates in a world-class event weekend hosted on November 11 and 12 at our home, Petco Park. Throughout our two days of fun-filled festivities, we provide options so people of all ages, skills, and abilities can rally around one vision: a world without cancer.

RIDER

With courses ranging from a short Urban Loop to the ultimate challenge of 150 miles over two days, we provide opportunities for all abilities and fitness levels.

  • Saturday morning rides cross the Coronado Bridge and include the flat Coronado Classic (~25 mi) and more challenging terrain on the Olympic Challenge (~55 mi) and Honey Springs Heartbreaker (~88 mi).
  • Sunday features relatively flat coastal terrain including the Mission Bay Ride (~21 mi), the Beneficiary Tour (~37 mi), and the Coastal Classic (~66 mi).
  • New for 2017: anyone can ride on both days! Create your ideal two-day experience by choosing any course option on Saturday paired with any course on Sunday.

STATIONARY BIKE RIDER

Looking for a fun, spirited challenge but don’t have a bike or prefer more of a group experience? Join us for up to four hours of high-energy cycling in our stationary cycling classes presented by LA Fitness on Sunday morning! Choose from a one-hour class (approx. 50 minutes of riding) or step it up and commit to multiple hours of leg-burning, heart-thumping cycling class! This year we have more bikes, more classes and a cooler location on the baseball field. All spinners commit to raising $300 per hour of participation to help create a world without cancer.

VIRTUAL RIDER

Anyone can be a Virtual Rider. Typically, our Virtual Riders are those who are unable to participate as a Rider, Stationary Cyclist, or Volunteer during Event Weekend, but still would like to fundraise to end cancer. Virtual Riders have profile pages just like everyone else where they can create a profile and solicit donations. We require an initial $50 self- donation as a minimum commitment during the registration process, and then encourage Virtual Riders to raise as much as they can. Virtual Riders who surpass $2,500 in fundraising receive incentive awards, just like all other participants.

KIDS CHALLENGE

Padres Pedal welcomes kids ages 3 through 12 to join us on the start line of a very special, one-of-a-kind kids loop geared at creating a world without cancer. Kids who step up to the Kids Challenge experience a fun afternoon of face painting, bike decorating, safely enclosed cycling, all culminating with a terrific finish line experience. Although kids are not held responsible for a fundraising commitment, we encourage all to follow the community and strive to raise as much money through their personal profiles to fund cancer research.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteers, we need you! Volunteers are our heart and soul, and play a vital role in the success of our event weekend. We have great opportunities for service groups and individuals who want to contribute to their community and help create a world without cancer through Padres Pedal.

Options range from ringing a cowbell at the finish line, serving oranges and drinks at refueling stations, helping riders check-in pre-ride and tons of other much-needed support. Identify your preferred time-slot, location and activity through the registration process. Although not obligated to fundraise, volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to get in the spirit of raising funds to support cancer research in San Diego and to go for those incentive levels!

How Padres Pedal the Cause Differs from Other Non-Profits in San Diego

While there are many charities in San Diego, Padres Pedal is one of the few non-profits in the area that uses the 100% model, meaning we give every penny of the proceeds we raise directly to cancer research, with the help of our generous sponsors. Padres Pedal the Cause is centered on a single event weekend co-produced by the San Diego Padres offering a unique cycling and celebration experience to all participants and attendees. We offer a variety of ways to participate, donate and volunteer to our cycling sourses. Even if you don’t have the money to donate to our cause, your time and support makes a real difference. If you’re looking for San Diego charities or non-profits in San Diego to support, or if you’re interested in Padres Pedal for your company’s Corporate Social Responsibility program, you can take part in our fundraising efforts knowing that your participation will have a direct, measurable impact.

Ride For A Child, Our Impact & Our Goal!

Our Ride for a Child program is unique among non-profits in San Diego and is especially rewarding. This program pairs a Padres Pedal team with a child and their family receiving treatment from the pediatric oncology department at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. Teams form a connection with the child they’re riding for, helping them maintain a sense of purpose and motivation. Many teams maintain contact with their Ride for a Child families long after the event is over and find participating in this program to be profoundly gratifying.

We’re pleased to say we’ve been able to donate $4,756,989 to cancer research so far, and we’re excited to continue making a real difference in the world of cancer treatment and prevention. We’ve had the honor of helping to fund 19 groundbreaking cancer research projects to date, and we hope our three-year vision will allow us to grow enough to raise $5 - $10 million per year by 2019. San Diego has become a proud center for world-class research, and we’re thrilled to donate to our four incredible beneficiaries here. Padres Pedal’s goals are big, but our mission is big, too. Join us and together, we can help end cancer.
