The Latest in Cancer Research in San Diego
San Diego is at the forefront of cancer research and Padres Pedal the Cause is proud to play a part in helping support cancer research in San Diego. With the funds we raise for our four beneficiaries, we’re able to help fund groundbreaking cancer research projects each year. Here’s some of the latest in cancer research in San Diego, and how it’s helping to study, prevent, identify, and treat a variety of cancers.
- In July, 2019, a research team headed by scientists at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at UC San Diego identified an enzyme that plays a part in remodeling the plasma membrane of various cancer cell types that has proven essential to the survival of tumors as well as their uncontrolled growth. This finding offers a possible target for new cancer-fighting drugs. These new drugs could help shrink malignancies and improve survival times.
- Researchers at Sanford Burnham Prebys, San Diego State University, and TumorGen MDx published a study detailing a microfluidic device that can capture circulating cancer cell clusters that cause tumors to spread to other vital organs. This device is a promising tool in helping researchers capture viable circulating cancer cell clusters, which could offer new therapeutic strategies that could help fight the metastasis of certain cancers in the body.
- A new clinical trial taking place at University of California San Diego is the culmination of decades of research on natural killer cells. The new treatment, currently being developed by San Diego’s Fate Therapeutics, uses cancer-killing cells derived from a type of stem cell called a human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). Using the stem cells in our own bodies, researchers are working to create a master bank of cells that can be programmed in a variety of ways to fight cancer with cellular immunotherapy. This new treatment is ideal for patients who have few chemo or immunotherapy treatment options.
Innovative research, and the information and treatments coming from this research, is vital to helping end cancer. It’s Padres Pedal’s hope that, with every dollar we raise for cancer research in San Diego, we are getting that much closer to our goal: Creating a world without cancer.
