Our Beneficiaries & Padres-Funded Projects

100% of the proceeds from Padres Pedal the Cause stay in San Diego to fund life saving cancer research projects conducted by our beneficiaries: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

Pedal Project Spotlight: Breast Cancer Genome Project
Padres Pedal the Cause Dr. Wahl Breast Cancer Research Project

When Dr. Geoffrey Wahl found out that Bianca and her sister had both been diagnosed with recurring breast cancer and neither had the common indicating genetic markers of hereditary breast cancer, he knew there must be another link that hadn’t been identified. After writing endless grant requests and gaining no traction he turned to Padres Pedal to fund his project. Five months later he was studying the family and searching for another genetic marker for breast cancer. This type of research is key to the prevention of breast cancer. “The cures to cancer will come from research and then implementation,” – Dr. Geoffrey Wahl

Pedal Project Spotlight: The Pancreatic Cancer Dream Team
Padres Pedal - Dr. Lowy Pancreatic Cancer Dream Team

In 2014, Padres Pedal the Cause granted funds to a team who formed a group of researchers with one focus: pancreatic cancer. The grant enabled this team to advance research so that ultimately they secured additional funding for their research. This, in turn, allowed them to expand nationally and form a Pancreatic Cancer Dream Team with researchers and doctors across the country. This team exemplifies the ultimate goal of Padres Pedal: funding San Diego beneficiaries who collaborate to further progress their findings with other top minds throughout the country.

Pedal Project Spotlight: Melanoma Patient Response to Checkpoint Immunotherapy
Padres Pedal the Cause - Grant to research immunotherapy for melanoma

In 2014, Padres Pedal funded a research grant to study promising immunotherapies that augment immune cell function to kill melanoma tumors. Once melanoma skin cancer spreads, current therapies are not effective and there are few treatment options. Immunotherapies do not work for everyone, therefore it is important to predict how a patient will respond to these drugs. This research will help to determine whether patients will have a productive response to the therapies. Additionally, should the results show promise in melanoma, the same tools can be further applied to combat other cancers.
