Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our riders, sponsors and supporters, Pedal the Cause 2013 generated a $425,000 net contribution to cancer research at our three NCI-designated cancer centers: UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, Salk Institute Cancer Center, and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute-San Diego.  One-hundred percent of the funds will stay right here in San Diego, as the C3 grants the Pedal the Cause funds to specific joint projects at these world-class institutes.

These are collaborations that can fast track research from the bench top to the bedside and benefit cancer care here in San Diego and globally.  It is our hope that the collaborations funded by Pedal the Cause in the coming years can produce synergies and results that have a positive influence on future grants from other sources including the NIH. As more information about the specific collaborations becomes available, we will share it with the Pedal community.

Many of the Pedal community is familiar with our beneficiaries, San Diego’s three National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers. UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, Salk Institute Cancer Center, and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute are part of San Diego’s powerhouse for cancer research, prevention and treatment.  As we start focusing on Pedal the Cause 2014, please visit our beneficiaries page for more details: http://sandiego.pedalthecause.org/beneficiaries.jsp

Heading into Pedal the Cause 2014, our goal is to support these singular institutions and their novel collaboration, the San Diego National Cancer Institute Cancer Centers Council, or C3. Thanks in part to Pedal the Cause riders and supporters, the C3 can leverage their distinct and combined resources and talents to accelerate understanding and innovative approaches for the treatment and prevention of cancer, the second leading cause of death in the nation and leading cause in San Diego.

The mission of C3 and Pedal the Cause are one in the same: to create a world without cancer. Pedal the Cause strives toward this goal through our incredible community that spreads the word about the importance of cancer research, and turns over every stone to raise money toward that goal. The C3 works toward a world without cancer through collaborative opportunities made possible by the extraordinary biomedical environment and resources in San Diego, with so many excellent cancer scientists and doctors. The C3 serves as an ongoing forum for increased interaction among the cancer centers and among people, with the aim of a deeper understanding of cancer and, ultimately, more and better treatments.  More information about the C3 is available through their website http://sdcancercouncil.org/SitePages/Home.aspx
